Fisher On The Coming RootsTech Conference

When I first started discovering the joys of geniehood, it was really something of an individual game. If I went to a library or archive, there was always some kindhearted soul who was happy to pass along a morsel of knowledge and wisdom to a fledgling researcher.

Those folks are still out there, thankfully. But today we have mass resources and collective knowledge we could have only dreamed of back in the 1980s. And the motherlode of such resources and knowledge is the World Series, Superbowl, and Academy Awards of genealogy... something called "RootsTech." (Go to RootsTech.org.)

The name combines searching for our roots with ever changing and more powerful technology. Even though some 28,000 genies of all levels personally attended at least one day of last year's three day conference (four if you count the opening "Innovator Summit"), hundreds of thousands more watched live video of the talks and classes from remote locations around the world.

Every year, RootsTech happens in Salt Lake City, Utah, and this year it happens Monday through Saturday, February 8-11. Watch on line if you cannot come, but if you can be there, plan to join David Allen Lambert, Tom Perry and myself at the Extreme Genes booth (#1325) for "Meet 'N' Greet"s on Thursday from 2:30-3:30 and / or Saturday from 10:15-11:15. We're all looking forward to seeing you!

Genealogy is still very much an individual thing, but there are a lot more individuals out there now with whom we can share our growing collective knowledge and joy of discovery!
